wtfox?!

I post on pretty much about anything: Feminism, social justice, X-Men: First Boyfriends, political activism, people I find physically and intellectually attractive, Dr. Who, food, popular culture and media matters, MST3K, old literature, Downton Abbey, gifs, and the occasional whiny, pointless status update.

I use the word "fuck" a lot.

Who sleeps, really? If you’re a proper adult person in the 21st century, how can you relax, at all? Your mind keeps churning. You think, “What if this thing happens?! What if that thing happens?! What if they happen together?! What if I lose my job?! I hate my fucking job! But what if I lose it?” Your mind is a hive of worms. And worms don’t live in a hive, so it already feels unnatural. You lie in bed, beside your partner… “What if I died?!” If you don’t have a partner, you just think, “What if I died? …Okay, I would be dead.” But if you do have a partner and family, you’d think, “What if I died? How would they cope?” They wouldn’t! They would be out in the street in half an hour, stealing food from seagulls mouths! Or worse! They WOULD cope! They’d have a much nicer, cleaner house! And an improved sense of self-worth. Probably more money! And inevitably your partner would find somebody within the first 3-4 days, and begin a tumultuous sexual relationship. They would be having sex a lot in your bed when you were dead! The morning, the afternoon, the evening, and the night time would be the main times they would be having sex, in your bed, when you were dead. Feeding each other lobster with their bare hands, to give each other more energy.

Oh god, this is almost exactly what goes through my head every night, minus the partner stuff because I am Forever Alone.

When someone says “Kids won’t understand how two men can be married” what they mean, what they’re trying to say, is “I don’t understand how two men can be married.” When they say “Kids won’t understand why their dick looks different from daddy’s” they’re trying to explain “I don’t understand why you want to be different from tradition.” When they say “Kids won’t know who’s the daddy and who’s the mommy” they are telling you “I cannot comprehend a world without very rigid gender roles, and as far as I know neither can anyone else.” If anyone can think of a counterexample, let me know, but from where I’m standing, it looks like every use of the “confused kids” argument is just people pushing their own incomprehension off onto some largely-hypothetical kids.

Think, for just a moment, about the irony. We are the most media-saturated 24-hour-cable-soaked culture in the world, and yet around the country, on Facebook and at protests, people are holding up cardboard signs, the way protesters in ancient Sumeria might have done when demonstrating against a rise in the price of figs. And why is that? Because they very wisely don’t trust television cameras and microphones to get it right anymore. Because a media constructed around the illusion of false equivalencies, screaming pundits, and manufactured crises fails to capture who we are and what we value.

It is sometimes said that scientists are unromantic, that their passion to figure out robs the world of beauty and mystery. But is it not stirring to understand how the world actually works — that white light is made of colors, that color is the way we perceive the wavelengths of light, that transparent air reflects light, that in so doing it discriminates among the waves, and that the sky is blue for the same reason that the sunset is red? It does no harm to the romance of the sunset to know a little bit about it.

Carl Sagan, Pale Blue Dot: A Vision of the Human Future in Space (1994)

I’ve never really understood people who think that knowing about a thing kills all the mystery. Ignorance isn’t the only posture necessary for wonder.

You know, you see people protesting with signs that say “God hates fags” or harassing abortion clinics constantly protesting out front with images of mutilated babies, but you never see the cops kick their ass, pepper spray them or arrest them…

The fire department is socialism! The fires will correct themselves by the invisible hand! I bet private fire fighters would handle this better!

Why glibertarianism is bullshit.  (via golden-notebook)

Because as we all know, the invisible hand is God, and God fixes things if you just pray to him.

Furthermore why have police?  Errybody shoud jus have guns.  Shoot those sunabitches.

(via babywipesenthusiast)

This is actually, and I am not kidding you, the rationale for the (batshit conservative) New Hampshire legislature overriding the governor’s veto on a bill that basically allows you to shoot anyone you feel is “threatening” you. One of the legislators, and I swear I’m not making this up, said the bill is about making private citizens “more responsible” for their own safety.

Which means, I guess, if you don’t have a gun and someone robs you, rapes you, or tries to kill you, it’s your own fucking fault for not taking responsibility for yourself and arming yourself and your entire family.

I hate Republicans.
